PDS – Power System Condition Monitoring
PDS – Power System Condition Monitoring
Introduction
In partnership with Power Diagnostic Solution (PDS), T Energy Industries have been providing specialize services in the field of advanced power system and equipment condition monitoring & diagnostic systems. Physical and electrical are two main methods for analysis, which can be achieved with PDS monitoring system, such as temperature, vibration and air gap for physical, power quality, active/reactive power, flux and shaft voltage & current for electrical.

Partial Discharge
Partial Discharge (PD) activity is an electrical discharge, which does not bridge the electrodes between an insulation system completely under high electric field stress, causing dielectric breakdown. It can be found at any point of an insulation system, where the electric field strength is over the breakdown strength of the insulation material. It occurs as symptoms of a number of failure mechanisms related HV system.
By adopting PD measurement, PD activity can be detected in advance, and further prevent operational failure or even more serious consequences from occurring.
Fault Investigation
Power system failure is always followed by equipment loss and production loss due to unexpected outage, even causing irreparable accident to employees. Fault investigation not just reveal the true causes of failure, and is beneficial to prevent similar incidents from happening, and further to improve the power system for a safer environment.
Procedures
- Information Collection
- Failure Condition
- Fault Analysis
Cable Testing
Power cable is considered as a capacitive equipment. While utilizing AC power source for high voltage testing, the size of power supply would be huge and is difficult to move. In this circumstance, AC resonant testing system is often used as a substitution, even though the related equipment is still quite bulky.
On the other hand, if DC power is applied, the only difficulty is the charging current of the cable system, and the size of power supply is small to carry. However, a few notable disadvantages of utilizing DC power in XLPE cable testing are: different electrical field distribution between AC and DC, space charge, can’t discover the defects, facilitating the development of water tree into electrical tree and etc.
Currently there are two alternatives: Very Low Frequency (VLF) and Damped Alternating Current (DAC).
